Monsanto RoundUp Lawsuits

Some scientific research has linked an herbicide in Monsanto’s Roundup® called glyphosate to several types of cancer

A WHO study found that glyphosate is a probable cause of non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2015. This finding was based on a review of multiple studies reviewing the effect glyphosate had on agricultural workers and forestry workers for more than a decade.

These highly discussed findings assert that the evidence suggests that those workers who were exposed to glyphosate were more likely to develop non-Hodgkin lymphoma than workers who were not exposed.

In addition to these findings, a number of other studies have cited a connection between Roundup’s glyphosate and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. In fact, tests by the US National Toxicology Program have also shown that Roundup’s glyphosate has a higher rate of toxicity to human cells than just glyphosate in isolation.

RoundUp Cancer Symptoms

If you have used Roundup for years and are unsure whether you have cancer, here are a few key symptoms that may be indicative of a cancer diagnosis:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Chest pain and/or shortness of breath
  • A deep sense of fatigue
  • Anemia
  • Loss of weight and/or appetite
  • Stomach or abdomen swelling

These symptoms (especially enlarged lymph nodes) are helpful for identifying a potential non-Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, which is the leading type of cancer in the pending Monsanto lawsuits involving Roundup.

A Closer Look at Glyphosate and its Link to Cancer

In early August of 2018, a San Francisco jury ordered Monsanto to pay $289 million in damages to Dewayne Johnson, a school groundskeeper, who received a terminal cancer diagnosis after using Monsanto’s Roundup weedkiller. Mr. Johnson used the weedkiller for many years, which uses an herbicide called glyphosate that has been linked to cancer.

In light of this high-profile verdict and thousands of additional lawsuits that are pending against Monsanto, here is a helpful, in-depth look at glyphosate and its link to cancer.

What Is Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is applied to the leaves of plants to kill weeds, to describe the herbicide in simplest terms. Glyphosate has been used around the world, and Roundup is a leading product that contains the herbicide.

Does Glyphosate Cause Cancer?

Some research (such as the influential findings from the World Health Organization that deemed glyphosate a likely carcinogen in 2015) has suggested glyphosate is linked to cancers like non-Hodgkin lymphoma, but this does not mean we know for certain that glyphosate causes cancer.

In short, this is not as clear-cut as asbestos, which we now know can cause mesothelioma when individuals are exposed to asbestos fibers. Rather, the science on Roundup and glyphosate causing cancer is not yet settled. The debate continues, and this is an important point to keep in mind.

If the Science Is Not Settled, Why Was Monsanto Ordered to Pay $289 Million?

Simply put, members of the San Francisco jury were largely punishing Monsanto. Specifically, the jury believed that Monsanto deprived the public of information regarding the potential harms and cancer links of glyphosate; the jury also believed this hiding of information was done intentionally.

It is also essential to note that this was the first trial regarding Roundup and glyphosate, but there are approximately 5,000 more lawsuits ongoing. It is likely that this legal debate and the scientific debate are both far from over.

Understand That the Questions Surrounding Glyphosate Are Not Settled

New research or scientific findings could significantly shift public and scientific opinion on the harms of glyphosate. As the science progresses, however, there is no reason to delay bringing legal action if you or a loved one was diagnosed with cancer after years of using Roundup weedkiller.

The uncertainty of the scientific landscape is no reason to sit on a legal claim, especially when Mr. Johnson’s claim proved successful based on the jury believing that Monsanto intentionally hid information from the public.

One day, we will know more information that will allow us to conclusively determine the extent to which glyphosate is harmful and cancerous. For now, protect your legal rights by reaching out to a Roundup cancer lawyer at The Ledger Law Firm for a free case evaluation. Our nationally recognized law firm will review your claim and use our resources to investigate the potential causal connection between Roundup use and a cancer diagnosis.
